In the period somewhere in the range of 1969 and 1971, wiretaps were introduced on phones around Washington DC for the sake of national security, and the Oval Office was furnished with voice-initiated recording devices, a choice that would later cause issues down the road for Nixon. In 1971, the CRP started to increase its political knowledge gathering exercises in anticipation of the forthcoming presidential political race. The gathering wanted to invade the Democratic National Committee (DNC) central station, situated on the 6th floor of the Watergate condo and office complex in Washington DC. 8 Amazing Audiobooks by Black Authors

8 Amazing Audiobooks by Black Authors Just like the title says, these are all amazing audiobooks. I mean they’re also great books in and of themselves, obviously, ranging from magical realism to funny personal essays to epic love stories. But quality writing doesn’t always guarantee a quality audiobook. For all of these, though, the audiobook version is top-notch andâ€"gasp!â€"maybe even better than the print version. Not only are all these authors blackâ€"American, Canadian, Jamaican, and/or Nigerianâ€"but so are all the narrators. Sea, Swallow Me and Other Stories by Craig Laurence Gidney: This is a gorgeously written and wildly inventive collection of magical realist / fantasy short stories. It’s the kind of writing that you want to linger over, because the language is so rich. These stories are strange in the best way, ranging from a Japanese monk seduced by a shape-shifting fairy to a tiger escaped from the circus merging with his African caretaker to become the monster that haunts a Southern town. Steve Ryan, the narrator, has a beautifully unique, emphatic voice that brings the darkness and eccentricity of these Lambda Literary Award finalist stories to life. Under the Udala Trees by Chinelo Okparanta: The Audie award-winning and renowned Robin Miles narrates this audiobook set in Nigeria, during the civil war of the late 60s and the years afterward. Listeners familiar with the ranges and potential transformations of Miles’s voice won’t be surprised at her success with the main character Ijeoma’s Nigerian accent and subtle yet complex personality. I was already hooked into this queer coming-of-age story in print, but was so drawn in by the audiobook when I checked it out that I switched formats half way through the book. Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates: I’m sure I don’t need to tell you much about this book, which is one of those pieces of writing that lives up to all the hype. In case you’ve been living under a rock for the past year, Between the World and Me is a series of letters from Coates to his son about blackness and race in America. It’s an incredibly powerful mix of memoir, journalism, and history. Coates narrates the book himself; not only does he simply have a beautiful voice, he infuses every sentence with urgency and passion. Self-Inflicted Wounds: Heartwarming Tales of Epic Humiliation by Aisha Tyler: You know an audiobook narrated by an author who’s an actress and comedian is going to be good. Aisha Tyler’s on-point comedic timing and effortless delivery makes this such a fun collection of funny stories about all the embarrassing, stupid shit she’s done in her life. It’s the kind of audiobook you just can’t stop listening to. Her writing is great, natural but evocative just like how she reads. It’s a bit like sitting down with your really articulate friend telling you I-can’t-believe-that’s-true stories. It never sounds like she’s reading off the page. Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie: This is another book I’m sure doesn’t need an introduction; Adichie’s international story about race and love centred around two Nigerian lovers over the cross of their lives has won and been nominated for oodles of awards. Why should you try the audiobook version? The narration by actress Adjoa Andoh, that’s why. It is just wow. She gracefully switches between accents, voices, genders, and more as she brings this eclectic cast of characters to life. You’ll never have trouble telling anyone apart. Andoh even excels at differentiating Ifemelus snarkier blog voice from her IRL one. A Brief History of Seven Killings by Marlon James: This audiobook read by a superbly talented cast of actors is really more of a radio play than an audiobook. Men, women, black, white, American, Jamaican, queer, and straight, all of these voices contribute to James’s epic story centring on the attempted assassination of Bob Marley in the late 70s. Not for the faint of heart, A Brief History of Seven Killings, as the title implies, is full of violence as well as ample swearing and drugs. But that’s not all there is to this multi-layered piece of fiction. For readers not familiar with Jamaican dialect, it is amazing to hear it pronounced as it should be by Jamaican actors. All of the acting is phenomenal: I’ll never forget the scene where a gang member dies and you could hear it in the actor’s laboured breathing. I can still hear the voices of the characters in my head almost a year after listening to it. Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston: This is a classic you may have already read that would be amazing to re-visit in audio form. You’ll see the main character Janie Crawford, the Southern black women living in the 30s and gaining her independence, in a whole new way. Like Marlon’s Brief History, there is dialect and vernacular speech in this book that if you’re not familiar with you just can’t appreciate if you’re only hearing it inside your own head. Ruby Dee, who narrates, has the gorgeously velvety voice of an old-school actress, full of feeling and poetry, just like Hurston’s words. I especially love how she does the characters’ laughs; they sound so real. Sister Mine by Nalo Hopkinson: This is another audiobook superbly narrated by Robin Miles, although in a voice almost unrecognizable from Under the Udala Trees. Sister Mine is a delightfully odd book about queer polyamorous demi-gods, dysfunctional families, sibling rivalry, Afro-Caribbean mythology, and present day Toronto. What really epitomizes the wonderful oddities of this book is the fact that there’s a character who used to be Jimi Hendrix’s guitar.  You know, he’s an enspirited object, currently in human form.  No big deal. Miles’s narration evokes both the magical and everyday elements of the book. Sign up for Audiobooks to receive the latest from the audiobooks world. Thank you for signing up! Community Problems Free Essays

Many neighborhoods face serious community problems because of certain factors and they have a certain effect on the people living In the communities. I live around a community where there are a lot of car street races which happen on a regular basis and It creates major chaos over the weekends. Seems Like It Is not a major Issue, however, these street races cause major trouble to all the neighbors as It creates noise, causes accidents. We will write a custom essay sample on Community Problems or any similar topic only for you Order Now Creates trouble for all the stores around, for people traveling at night and so on. Every weekend, a specific parking lot in the town of Formidable is filled with Hot Rods, college students, high school students and even adults, not to mention, cops too. This is a huge parking lot outside a mall which has plenty of room for cars and is connected to a highway-route 110. It is the main attraction for guys and girls with hot rods. I heard a lot of stories about this location and about the races taking place there every weekend so I decided to take a look for myself before I could believe any of this. One night, I made a trip to this famous parking lot! At first, when I got to the parking lot, all I saw was a few random cars parked with some guys standing around them and talking to each other In groups. I parked my car there and stopped to watch what happens. I was extremely curious because I had only heard of these kind of scenes in movies and never thought it would be the reality. A little after 1 1 pm, a group of cars came into the parking lot with extremely loud exhaust pipes and loud music. As they revved up the engines my adrenaline started pumping. I could not believe what my eyes saw. A large number of cars drove n and parked there. There were people of all different age groups coming in from high school students, to college students and even elderly men around the age of forty who wanted to show off their hot rods. Soon after, some drivers including female drives took their cars out into the driveway and started drifting and performing rolling burnouts to get the crowd excited. I stepped out of my car and stood there to watch. These people were enjoying themselves with loud music, alcohol, dancing with girls and screaming and shouting. I was shocked when a few gig school kids approached me to ask me about my car because these kids were 9th graders who had sneaked out of their houses at midnight with their parents cars for these races. After around half an hour, a group of cars revved up their engines and started moving towards route 110 so I decided to follow. Once we got onto route 110 they start driving like crazy people over speeding and cutting lanes and eventually turned onto a street off route 110. This lane was completely isolated and there were barely any cars parked there so they lined up their cars there and made a roadblock t the two ends of the lane and started having drag races which made a lot of sound and obviously called In for cops. This is where the major problems from these races start. Once the cops come In, chaos occurs. These guys get Into their cars and started racing off from these race sites In all different directions to avoid getting caught. They go onto the main roads and over speed causing accidents not only for themselves but all the noise they create. They get into accidents, get caught and pay fines, cause trouble to other drivers on the road and so on. This is a major community problem as it attracts a lot of students in the community from not only colleges but also high schools. These kids have illegal modifications on their cars which adds to money in the black market. It also encourages many others to Join this racing league which leads to accidents and deaths. There is a lot of illegal betting and gambling, underage drinking, over speeding and many such laws broken which cause serious community problems every weekend and according to me this should be checked and stopped as soon as possible! How to cite Community Problems, Papers

Narrative Is a Husky the Right Pet for You Essay Example

Narrative Is a Husky the Right Pet for You? Essay Is the Siberian husky the right dog for you? Alix Marianne Cormier American Intercontinental University At a very young age I was always fascinated with huskies, there beauty and wolf like features. My parents never let me have one; we had other dogs but never a husky. I can see why now. I didn’t know what I was getting myself into until about a year ago that I got one; don’t get me wrong, I would never trade her for anything in this world. This Angel had her own plan. This past year has been an amazing experience with these free spirited, mischievous natured dogs. This is how it all began. Twelve months ago I went to take my children to their new friend’s house to have some play time and get to know each other better. I met their parents and everything was going well; Out of the corner of my eye I noticed a crate with a beautiful white husky with piercing icy blue eyes, it was love at first sight! It was then that I said I want one so bad. Two weeks later I got a phone call from them asking me if I knew of anyone that wanted to adopt their husky, needless to say I didn’t hesitate to answer I wanted her, an hour later I had her home. For the next two days I was off from work so I was able to spend some time with her so she can get adjusted to her new surroundings, everything seemed to go pretty well. The following day I put her in the crate and went to work. On my way home that evening I was excited to get home to see my Angel, I found myself with a huge surprise! She got out of the crate and destroyed my Christmas tree and ate some of my plants! Luckily they weren’t poisonous, I was very upset. I cleaned everything up and fixed my Christmas tree. The following day I spent some time with her and went to work as scheduled, I put her back in the crate and off I went. Throughout the day I was nervous to come home and find a disaster again, wondering if she managed to get out of the crate again. Well she did and this time she went into my room and got into all my makeup! Her white coat was covered in makeup and everything was destroyed, I was able to salvage very little of it. After all of this I adjusted her crate, I put zip ties all the way around it so she couldn’t get out while I was at work. I came home that evening to find all the zip ties in the bottom center of her crate and a big whole in my carpet where she tried to dig her way out and still managed to unlock the crate and let herself loose again! Very smart! It is said to never outsmart a husky, I was not about to give up or let her outsmart me. I started doing some research on this breed, and came across Cesar Milan and other documentaries on huskies, I was surprised and now had my hands full. As the weeks went by and with a lot of patience it was getting better and better. This particular breed is a strong working sled dog that needs to be stimulated and given a job to do to keep them occupied and active. They have great stamina and can endure long periods of time running without getting tired. I go to the gym six days a week, so I decided instead of using the treadmill after my workout to take Angel for a jog every day. I got her a doggie back pack that can be filled with bottles of water and food for added weight to help her burn some of that energy and at the same time it gives her a job to do, she carries our supplies. We now enjoy hiking, bike riding, rollerblading and jogging with her. Wherever we go Angel goes, she loves car rides, she is part of the family now. We haven’t had any incidents with her since, except for her bringing dinner home for the family such as squirrels, â€Å"we don’t eat squirrel Angel† I wish I can stop her from doing that but I can’t it’s in her nature to hunt. And I must add I don’t reprimand her for doing so either, she’s just doing her job as part of the family, and it will be a happy day when she brings home a turkey. Now it’s time to think about it, is this type of breed right for you? Huskies are gentle, loving, playful, happy go lucky dogs. They are keen, social, relaxed, docile and rather casual. Good with children, high energy dogs, friendly with strangers. They are not toy dogs or pretend dogs they are real dogs. They are not watch dogs, they rarely bark and love everyone. Very highly intelligent, they are known for their Houdini-like capabilities. They only obey commands if they see the human is the pack leader and stronger minded than they are. A husky that does not get exercised or mental stimulation can be very destructive at your own cost. Huskies like to roam, and are thrifty eaters, they eat less food than you can expect compared to regular dogs. They are not fetching dogs! They are prey dogs. This particular breed is not for the weak minded or lazy, they can make great companions if you are willing to commit, have the patience and know what to expect from this breed. They love a lot of attention and love to give kisses. They can also keep you warm and snuggle during the winter months. I must add this particular breed sheds there coat twice a year, after winter and in the fall. The winter coat is the heaviest! They must be brushed daily. When Angel was shedding her winter coat it was a mess! Hair everywhere! I had to vacuum and brush her every day for two months, I brushed at least six dogs worth of hair off of her, and that’s not counting what was in the vacuum which I emptied every time I used it. They are good with other pets if trained from puppies, except for cats. They don’t do well in the heat if exposed for long periods of time, they must have well ventilated areas, lots of water and air conditioning if in warmer climates, and they love the snow! Of course there sled dogs. If you have a garden be aware, this breed likes to dig, it’s in there nature to dig holes in the snow to keep themselves from cold wind, on the other hand in warmer climates they will dig to keep themselves cool. They have some health issues such as hip dysplasia, eye issues like juvenile cataracts, skin disorders known as zinc responsive dermatitis which can be treated. This breed also prefers to live in packs such as a family not a single person home, does not do well if left alone. When my kids go to school and I go to work she’s in the crate with toys and bones to keep her entertained and we leave cartoons on for her so she feels at ease until we get back. And last but not least this breed is known for their talking skills and howling! For me it’s like having another teenager in the house, if I reprimand her for something she will argue back with me and if I tell her NO she will start howling! Just as I ask her to sing! It’s amazing. Consider all of this before getting a husky, and remember, a tired husky is a happy husky. Angel is my companion and friend for life, she keeps me on my toes and I wouldn’t trade her for anything in this world.

The Dark Knight Review First Draft Essay Example

The Dark Knight Review First Draft Essay Example The Dark Knight Review First Draft Essay The Dark Knight Review First Draft Essay What comes to mind when you hear the word Batman? A dark figure looming in Gothams alleys? Adam West and Burt Ward Whamming and Powing their enemies? Or possibly one of the greatest films of the decade? Its fair to say that since the 70s,the original comic character Batman has changed( maybe develop this point), reincarnated with many different looks, and the outcome in my opinion is too camp or too dark. In his latest film, the director Christopher Nolan, seems to have the balance just right in The Dark Knight.( try to vary the opening of sentences) The film starts as a heist movie, a bank raid masterminded by the Joker (Heath Ledger), which is apposite as Heath Ledger steals every scene that hes in. Christian Bale also does a great performance (can you improve expression here)as Batman/ Bruce Wayne. However it seems that one of the reasons for Heath Ledger being hailed as the star is the contrast between the Joker and Batman that he brings to the role. Batman is very dark and serious (some might say, boring) and in a way that makes him boring; the Joker however is just insane, with his purple suit and constantly changing stories about how he got his scars. (Amoral and psychopathic , he explains ) and he evens mentions in the film how he will just commit homicide for no reason at all and that he just does things. He is, in terms of the 9/11 analogy, not just a terrorist but worse, an anarchist who just kills and destroys for fun. He is very creepy and completely mesmerising. The film also features Harvey Dent played wonderfully by Aaron Eckhart who is Gothams clean-cut DA who believes in justice and makes a stand against the mob and corruption; surprisingly enough there are a lot of attempts to kill him by the Joker. There is a (The clichà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½d love triangleis guaranteed to win approval from sections of the audience) love triangle in the film between Batman, Rachel (Maggie Gyllenhall) and Harvey Dent. Rachel is Bruces oldest friend and she knows that he is Batman, but she feels that Gotham will always need Batman and so that is why she chooses Harvey over Bruce. (comment on her moral stance. Is it convincing?) Gary Oldman (stars in the film) delete? as Jim Gordon, head of Gotham police department, clashes with Harvey Dent as they both have different ways of handling criminals. Jim Gordon is literally law and Harvey Dent is literally Order. The Dark Knight is a Batman morality tale turned up to 11- exploring the nature and corruption of power, the organization of society in crisis, individual freedom versus collective security, and (most interestingly of all), its allusions to the Roman Empire. If Harvey Dent is a Caesar figure, then the Joker is Caligula. ( The semi-colon is not used to introduce a list. It allows you to add a new sentence related to your first without separation by a full stop.) Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine are also in the film (it really is a star studded cast), Michael Caine plays Alfred Bruces Butler, best friend and assistant. ( The inclusion of Michael Caine alongside Morgan Freeman in this star studded cast allows Hollywood to emphasise Alfreds Englishness. One of the greatest British actors of the last thirty years, his iconic London accent will surely intrigue an American audience)It seems that Hollywood really wanted to emphasize that Alfred was English and so they chose one of the greatest actors of all time with a very thick London accent, (in case youre wondering Danny Dyer was not second choice for the role), he is probably the best Alfred compared to other actors who have taken on the role before.(if this is your opinion then be more assertive. Reviewers generally are.) Morgan Freeman plays (as)Lucius (avoid repetition of verbs like plays)Fox the man who essentially runs Wayne Enterprises and is one of Bruces many friends; he also has the v ery exciting job that all boys dream of being (doing/achieving) when they are grown up: the creator of Batmans gadgets and weapons. The film explores many themes: batman represents hope; he is incorruptible. Harvey Dent symbolises fate or chance.; Rachel symbolises love as all the males fall for her and loyalty is .. The film (explores)(has) many themes( in it) and it is almost as if with each character representing represents on of those themes, Batman for hope, as he is incorruptible; Harvey Dent for chance, as he carries around a coin with him to help him make decisions; Rachel for love as it seems Batman, Harvey Dent and even the Joker have all taken a fall for her; Alfred stands for loyalty as he has served Bruce Wayne since he was a child and raised him when his parents were dead; the world would be a much better place if everyone were like Alfred! The special effects in the film are very impressive. One of the more breath taking examples is Two Face who is half man, half burns. Half of his face is that of Harvey Dent, the other half is severe burns. This signifies goes with the 50:50, chance, toss a coin theme of Harvey Dent; in fact Two Face uses the same coin to decide whether to kill someone or not. There is also a contrast made between Harvey Dent and Batman as they are both fighting the same enemy, Harvey Dent does this in court and Batman does this in the streets. However Batman is less a person, more an idea of the upholding of the law. ( This used to be fine but) delete? Christopher Nolan suggests that the citizens are restless and the heroes need to come from within society not those conspicuously outside it, (9/11 heroes were the firemen and police officers of New York), and in fact the film is full of images that mirror the havoc after 9/11. One other contrast made in the film is that between the Joker and Batman; at first you may think that they are total opposites but then you find that actually they are both similar. They are outcasts, freaks as the Joker says (in the film) to Batman When they dont need you any more theyll hunt you down. In addition Bruce Wayne and Batman are total opposites; Batman is a vigilante who dedicates his life to fighting for good, and Bruce Wayne on the other hand is a wooden, envious, charisma free pompous businessman. The Dark Knight is more of a hero movie than a superhero movie, as in it is far more realistic; Batman cant fly or shoot web out of his hands but he can make things explode! But this isnt just (can you improve expression here) with the Dark Knight. Batman has always been an outcast to over ? superheroes as there is in fact nothing super about him; he is just up to his neck in gadgets. If all the superheroes went to school together Batman would be the one sitting alone at lunch, while Spiderman and Superman sat at the table with the popular kids. Also other films released recently have had a big (significant) effect on how it was directed, for example the action in Bourne films are (is) very similar to the action in the Dark Knight,( but it is not a bad thing.. can you improve expression here) it is not uncommon to hear a gasp while you are watching the scene where a Juggernaut does a front flip or where a whole building is blown up. The question of individual freedom versus collective security (a question thrown up by 9/11) is brought into case, when BatmanBruce Wayne invents a device which can monitor everyone in the city using their phones. It was created with the intent of finding the Joker and stopping him from claiming anymore lives; the only person who can operate it however is Lucius Fox, who feels that there is something morally wrong with it. He chooses to use it only once and then he makes Batman promise to destroy it; he agrees. This is also (reminiscent of ancient Rome)similar to the Caesar idea. When the enemies were at their gates, the Romans would choose one man to have power over them so that they could defeat their enemies; they had to give up freedom and democracy to survive and when the battle was won that one man would go back to his previous position. However the last man that the Romans chose used the power they had given him to rule over them. His name was Caesar. This was what Lucius was worried would happen to Batman if he kept that device. A phrase, which is often used in the film, is You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain. In fifty years time, there will have been countless incarnations of Batman. Some will be good some will be bad, some will feature Robin, some without him; well see familiar faces of villains and well also see some new evildoers. But one thing is certain! (about these films. delete?) None will be as good as The Dark Knight.

5 New Year’s resolutions for your career in 2019

5 New Year’s resolutions for your career in 2019 ‘Tis the season†¦ to come up with all the ways your life will be better, more healthy, and more profitable next year. In a few weeks, all our best intentions will kick in and we’ll be ready for changes. Some may stick, and some may not, but it’s always good to have a plan. Here are some resolutions you can dedicate yourself to in order to boost your career in 2019.Resolutions to boost your career in the coming yearResolve to be more accountableThe reason so many New Year’s resolutions fail is that although we’re great at coming up with things we need and want to improve, actually getting the work done tends to get lost in the realities of everyday life and routine. If you want to make lasting changes to your professional fortunes in 2019, start by committing to a set of (reasonable) goals. If you lay out your goals and write down the steps you’ll need to take to get there, you’re more likely to stick to them. Setting small goals al ong the way and having the satisfaction of ticking them off makes distant year-long goals seem more attainable and may keep you on the right path.Resolve to take the next step in your career, even if you’re not ready to quitâ€Å"Find a new job† is a pretty common resolution. But if you don’t want to leave your job, job hunting isn’t the only way to move up. Think about what it will take to get a promotion in your current gig. What skills will you need? Start working on those. What does that next step look like? Talk to your boss and let him or her know that you’re looking to take the next step, and discuss your options for taking on more responsibilities, getting more training, or doing whatever you need to do to level up.Resolve to be less stressedWork stress is not only an impediment to your goals, but it can also damage your health and overall happiness. Resolve to find good outlets for work stress. Maybe it’s a new hobby. Maybe itâ€⠄¢s arriving at work half an hour early to have some peaceful time before emails need answering and coworkers start arriving for the day. Whatever would help you feel more calm and centered when things are chaotic, try to build some of it into your routine on a daily basis.Resolve to build your networkYour professional network is one of the best assets you have in your career. It can be a sounding board, or a pipeline to new opportunities. Unfortunately, social media is a double-edged sword here- it makes it easier to add people to your network, but also easier to keep those relationships shallow and stagnant without having to put in much effort. To get the most out of your network, build relationships outside of Facebook likes and LinkedIn notifications. Start with your existing network and think about which relationships you’d like to polish. If you live in the same area as a key contact, have lunch with that person every few months. If you’re distant, drop an email t o get a conversation going. If you want to make your network bigger, set a goal of adding X number of new contacts per month- maybe find friends of friends who work in industries or at companies you’re interested in, or join professional meetups or other communities.Resolve to take more risksOne of the best things you can do, career-wise, is take a chance on new opportunities. This could mean taking on tasks or projects that are new to you, or attempting a new job that’s outside of your comfort zone. That’s not to say you should quit your job tomorrow and go where the job market takes you, but at least be willing to consider making changes outside your routine. The â€Å"new year, new you† novelty and enthusiasm may last about as long as your new January gym routine. However, if you approach them realistically and with commitment, the goals you set for your career now can help set you up for a whole year of successes and learning opportunities.

Changes brought on by blogging and social media on public relations Research Paper

Changes brought on by blogging and social media on public relations - Research Paper Example Public Relations (PR) is the act of managing the informational flow that occurs between a business/company or organization and the public (Stuart, 2012). It is an essential part of business operations, and any successful company requires this part of business in order to maintain a relationship with its target market which in this case can be referred to as the audience. The introduction of blogging to the business world has affected the public relations sector in a number of ways, and it can be said that it has become an essential factor in this part of business as its popularity has continued to rise over the years (Fraser, 2007). Companies have developed the need to integrate blogs and blogging into their PR system as its growth has made it a medium of importance. There are various changes that have been brought on by blogging on Public relations as it has affected various areas related to this practice. Some of these areas and the changes that have been to them include: Communication can be said to be the sector that has been mostly affected by the introduction of blogging to Public Relations. The mode of communication has developed as a result of the introduction of blogs to the internet as the traditional methods can be said to have been surpassed as a result of this new activity (Bruns & Jacobs, 2006). Whereas in the past most companies depended on the more traditional mediums such as TV, Radio and Print media to pass on their information to the public, the introduction of blogs has brought on a new trend where these mediums are no longer a necessity for those organizations who may wish to pass on certain information to the public (Fraser, 2007). The internet has spread throughout the world like wild fire, and as a result there is a large demographic population that have turned to the World Wide Web as a source of information thus

This a research Paper on Thomas Gray the Poet Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

This a on Thomas Gray the Poet - Research Paper Example His criticisms reiterated on the perception that Gray was fond of communicating using two languages that comprised of a private and public language. The use of private language was somehow challenging. This can be ascertained in his poem that is entitled; the "Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard," which was published way back in year 1751 (Burns & Robert, 1992). On the other hand, William Wordsworth, in his preamble, made decisions to the Lyrical Ballads using the Grays piece of work entitled "Sonnet on the Death of Richard West" that was published in 1775. He used it as an example to depict that Thomas Gray was generally ruled by a fake ideology of poetic articulation that was brought out using a wrong language. In an equal judgment, Matthew Arnold gave a remark on the perspective that the age was erroneous for such a highly serious poetry. Gray also in the same manner and with familiar discernment, asserted that the age was wrong for poetry of such significance. To be noted was that Gray was affected by his ultimate age and thus failed to speak out totally. So, the main precarious biography of Gray’s reputation and reception regarding his poetry are summed up by all these judgments. The attraction of attentive critics has mainly been due to the fact of extra ordinary continuation of ‘Elegy’s significance. It is because this piece of work has been outstanding and seems to be indisputably superior especially when measured against all the other performances. Gray was born in a place known as Cornhill back in the year 1716; and was the 5th child of 12 children of Dorothy and Philip Gray, and more so he was the solitude survivor during infancy. Between the year 1725 and 1734, he attended Eton institution, where he then met Horace Walpole and Richard West, who were very influential. In 1734 he joined Peter house College in Cambridge University. After four

The issues faced by Greyhound Lines

The issues faced by Greyhound Lines Greyhound Lines, Inc. is the one and only countrywide contributor of intercity bus service in the United States. Its task force of 2,400 buses brings further than 22.5 million travelers every year in excess of a road system that lengthen for further than 75,000 miles. Greyhound schedule to further than 2,600 destinations, with 18,000 on a daily basis leaving. Additionally to its programmed traveler services, the corporation suggests charter bus service, express package service in the course of Greyhound Package Express, and food service at a number of its workstation. Greyhound is also caught up in cross-border bus service throughout joint ventures with Mexican transportation businesses. The bus company that develops into Greyhound was created in 1913 by Carl Earl Wickman. The secret to Wickmans early on achievement was making best use of ridership, which took the appearance of padding 18 miners into a seven-passenger Hupmobile. Wickmans revenues start on to boost, and he took on bus iness buddies who lend a hand for him in supply funds in bigger bus SUMMARY Greyhound Lines is the nations largest bus company. However, they face a big problem when they start to introduce computerization system in the business. The problem became a major problem to their company because they took the wrong part in making decision just to increase profit and customer service. The top level manager face financial problems by introducing computerize system in their business without taking into the middle level managers opinion. Greyhound was facing non-programmed decision problem where the top level managers take a precise solution for an exceptional problem. The software called Trips software. There were problems such as the customers dont have credit card or telephone to make use of Trip software. Furthermore, the software sometimes not working and it take time to print the ticket out, this make the customer frustrated for waiting in line for so long. Was the decision facing Greyhound executives programmed or non-programmed? Programmed decision means resolution previously obtainable from earlier period knowledge to resolve troubles that are well-known, clear-cut, and obvious with value to information requirements. These judgments relate finest to problems that are subject of custom, even though it is not unsurprising but they can predict. However, non-programmed decision means relate precise way out ability for an only one of its kind problem. the majority problems handle by advanced rank manager are of this kind, with the problems frequently concerning alternative of tactic and purpose in situation of some doubt. Therefore, Greyhound is facing non-programmed decision. There are three type of non-programmed decision such as re-organization, computerization, and improve customer services. Firstly, re-organization means a renovation of a company business, as well as a obvious transform in resources formation, over and over again subsequent a disappointment and receivership or liquidation trusteeship. Greyhound Lines face re-organization when they introduced computerize system in their business. Some of their customers dont know how to use a credit card or telephone to call to book a ticket for them. This have cause the operators receive many calls from their customer about they dont know how to use the software and they cant get access to the Trip software. Secondly, computerization is a factor of non-programmed. Computerization means to control, perform, process, or store (a system, operation, or information) by means of or in an electronic computer or computers. The customer cant access to the software so they customer directly come to the ticket selling place to buy the ticket. However, when the customers try to buy the ticket, they have to wait for 5 minute and 45 second to the computer to process and print the ticket. These causes the number of customer wait to buy ticket decrease because they feel angry to wait for so long to buy a ticket. Thirdly, Greyhound also has to improve customer service to solve the problem that the company is facing now. Customer services means expanding our thinking about customer service; if were going to consistently exceed customers expectations, we have to recognize that every aspect of our business has an impact on customer service, not just those aspects of our business that involve face-to-face customer contact. Greyhound has been overwhelmed by plentiful customer criticism, as well as constantly not on time buses, impolite employees, unhygienic services, insecure environment, mechanical breakdown and accidents. Buses have been recognized to get there quite a lot of hours after their programmed arrival time and employees have been unconcerned and even orally insulting of passengers who ask over for assist. This is one of the reason that the top level decide to introduce computerize system. In conclusion, There are three type of non-programmed decision such as re-organization, computerization, and improve customer services. Greyhound can learn from the experiences of others to solve this problem. Two very common mistakes company make when breakdown organizational change are they try to manage on their own and they fall short to advantage from the knowledge of others. Thousands of bus organizations maybe have faced circumstances similar to Greyhound. So they can try to have a discussion to these knowledgeable people. Pick their intelligence. Discover out what other people in Parallel Corporation are responsible to deal with downsizings or development. They also can study books and articles about these problems. QUESTION 2 Do you think Greyhound should have used the classical, administrative, or political model to make decision? Which do you believe it used? Discuss. Provide examples to justify your answer. The classical management approaches focal point on budding general standard for applies in a variety of organization circumstances. However, administrative management approaches means center of attention on human being requirements, the work group and the position of community feature in the place of work. In the other hand, political management approaches means focus on put into operation mathematical method for administration of crisis solving. Greyhound uses classical model then the other two models. There are three types of classical approaches such as scientific management, administrative principle, and bureaucratic organization. Firstly, scientific management means highlight cautious selection and training of workers, and decision-making support. This management is found by Frederick Taylor and Frank and Lilian Gilbreth. There four guiding action principles that Greyhound have used to improve their business. First of all, develop for each job a science that contain regulations of movement, consistent work progression and appropriate working circumstance, then they have to choose workers with the exact skill for the occupation, cautiously coach workers to do the job and offer them the suitable encouragement to work together with the job science, and maintain workers by carefully scheduling their job and by level the method as they go regarding their jobs. Greyhound should plan properly for the employees to what have to be done in specific given time. Greyhound should make the employees feel like home in their working place so that the employees do the work in time. Secondly, administrative principle is based on effort to file and be aware of the skill of victorious managers. This principle developed by Henry Fayol and Mary Parker Follet. There five important point in this principle. First of all, Greyhound have to foresight which means they have to complete a plan of action for the expectations where they should have plan A and plan B so that if one plan fail then they can go for the second plan. Then, Greyhound has to offer and assemble resources to implement the plan. So Greyhound has to be preparing in financial way and equity way to achieve their future plan. Furthermore, Greyhound has to control to guide, decide on, and appraise workers to get the most excellent work towards the plan for example employees is one of the most important source that going make these idea into reality so Greyhound has to very careful in choosing their employees so that Greyhound can move into future plan then just sit around worrying about employees attitudes t o customers. Moreover, coordination and control can make sure the work goes according to the plan. Thirdly, bureaucratic organization is a balanced and well-organized structure of organization establish on common sense, regulate and lawful power. There are five factors in bureaucratic such as clear division of labor, clear hierarchy of authority, formal rules and procedures, impersonality, and career based on merit. Greyhound have to define very clearly what the employees have to do then the worker have to report to higher level people after that the higher level people have to a report of the work. If the employees follow the rules and regulation properly and did their work then the managers have to reward the employees to boost the employees to do better than now. In conclusion, Greyhound has to plan properly, if they want to invent computerization in the company. Employees is one of the most important people in making the company success internal so Greyhound have to give time to for the employees to celebrate their accomplishments. Futhermore, there are Christmas festivity in December to do party and the yearly corporation picnic in the summer for the employees to enjoy their movement with their higher level people. This can be surprised for Greyhound on how a great deal of a difference this can create. QUESTION 3 Analyze the Greyhound case in terms of the steps in the managerial decision making process. Do you think top executive paid adequate attention to all the steps? I f you were a Greyhound, what would you do now and why? Decision making means the procedure of making selection among other path of action. There are five stepladders in decision making which is very important for business. This decision creation representation in five steps is a common but extremely successful outline for making decisions and put an end to problems. This discipline will help prevent Greyhound from receiving unfocused on a number of small elements of the significant steps leading to a decision. Firstly, Greyhound has to identity and defines the problem that they are facing. In anticipation of Greyhound have an obviously thoughtful of the dilemma or decision to be made, it is worthless to continue. If the problem is stated the wrong way or indistinguishably then Greyhounds result will be incorrect. Greyhound didnt consider what the middle manager is thinking such as the employees are very rude to the customer, then Greyhound implement computerize system to solve the first problem, however, the top level didnt think about the customer who dont know how to use the software and Greyhound didnt test the software before implementing which cause the customer cant buy ticket in that software. Moreover, after everything being computerizes the customer have to wait so long in queue to buy ticket for their journey. Secondly, Greyhound has to generate and evaluate possible solution to solve the problem that they are facing. Greyhound should have know that there is possible whether to do it or dont do it when they want to implement something new in the business. Most of the time Greyhound should know that there will possible substitute for their decision. It is worth for Greyhound doing research to ensure whether they have as many good alternatives as possible. For example, Greyhound implement customer service to take care of the customer problem with the employees or Greyhound can send the entire employee to a course which teaches them how to be polite to customer. Furthermore, if Greyhound wants to implement computerize system in their business then they should test all the software available in market before choosing one of the software which is the best one. Thirdly, Greyhound has to choose a solution to solve the problem. Then main problem is the employees treated the customer very badly and implementing computerizes system so Greyhound can have a department especially for the customer to complain about their dissatisfaction and Greyhound has to do research first before choosing software. Then Greyhound has to implement the solution which means they have to put their plan into work. Finally, they have to evaluate the result whether it satisfied the customer. Greyhound can do survey whether the customer satisfied with the service that they provide. As customer is the most important people in helping the business increase their revenue. CONCLUSION In conclusion, although Greyhound faces a serious problem in introducing computerize system in their business especially Trip software which cause Greyhound suffer losses in their business. However, they still manage to overcome the problem by changing high-speed Kodak scanners are used to scan the large volume of data. This optimized high-speed scanning software was developed by Combined Computer Resources, Inc which helps Greyhound overcome their problem and increase the business profit. Being creative is one of the most excellent habits to deal with managerial transform is to rev up the managers natural powers for creative intervention. Most problems are amenable to creative, innovative solutions. The only things that frequently persist in this resolution from occur is the Greyhounds own inner obstacle and nature obligatory boundaries. Creative crisis resolve all the time contain jeopardy. Suggesting fresh thought summons disapproval from others. What if the plans not succeed? Wha t if business losses take place? What if things wind up worse than previously? They got to be enthusiastic to understand such risks if they are going to be free to think creatively. (1800 words)

Great Pyramid at Giza

The Great Pyramid of Giza, located about ten miles  southwest of Cairo, was built as a burial site for Egyptian pharaoh Khufu in the 26th century BCE. Standing at 481 feet high, the Great Pyramid  was not only  the largest pyramid ever built, it remained one of the tallest structures in the  world until the late 19th century.  Impressing visitors with  its massiveness and beauty, its no  surprise that the Great Pyramid at Giza was considered one of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World. Amazingly,  the Great Pyramid  has withstood the test of time, standing for  over 4,500 years; it  is the only Ancient Wonder to have survived to the  present. Who Was Khufu? Khufu (known in Greek as Cheops)  was the second king of the 4th dynasty in ancient Egypt, ruling for about 23 years in the late 26th century BCE. He was the son of Egyptian Pharaoh Sneferu and Queen Hetepheres I. Sneferu  remains famous for being the very  first pharaoh to build a pyramid. Despite fame for building the second and largest pyramid in Egyptian history, theres not a lot more that we know about Khufu.  Only one,  extremely tiny (three inch), ivory statue has been found of him, giving us  just a glimpse at what he must have looked like.  We know that two of his children (Djedefra and Khafre)  became pharaohs after him and it is believed that he had at least three wives. Whether or not  Khufu was a kind or evil ruler is still debated. For centuries, many believed that he must have been hated because of stories that he used slaves to create the Great Pyramid. This has since been found untrue. It is more likely that the Egyptians, who viewed their pharaohs as god-men, found him not as beneficent as his father, but still a traditional, ancient-Egyptian ruler.   The Great Pyramid The Great Pyramid is a masterpiece of  engineering and workmanship. The accuracy and precision of the Great Pyramid astounds even modern builders. It stands on a rocky plateau located on  the west bank of the Nile River in northern Egypt. At the time of construction, there was nothing else there. Only later did this area become built up with two additional pyramids, the Sphinx, and other mastabas. The Great Pyramid is huge, covering a little over 13 acres of ground. Each side, although not exactly the same length, is about 756-feet long.  Each corner is nearly an exact 90 degree angle. Also Interesting is that each side is aligned to face one of the cardinal points of the compass -- north,  east, south, and west. Its entrance lies in the middle of the north side. The structure of the Great Pyramid is made from 2.3 million, extremely large, heavy, cut-stone blocks, weighing an average of 2 1/2 tons each, with the largest weighing 15 tons. It is said that when Napoleon Bonaparte visited the Great Pyramid in 1798, he calculated that there was enough stone to build a one-foot-wide, 12-feet-high wall around France.   On top of the stone was placed a smooth layer of white limestone. At the very top was placed a capstone, some say made of electrum (a mixture of gold and silver). The limestone surface and the capstone would have made the entire pyramid sparkle in sunlight. Inside the Great Pyramid are three burial chambers. The first lies underground, The second, often mistakenly called the Queens Chamber, is located just above ground. The third and final chamber, the Kings Chamber,  lies in the heart of the pyramid. A Grand Gallery leads up to it. It is believed that Khufu was buried in a heavy, granite coffin within the Kings Chamber. How Did They Build It? It seems amazing that an ancient culture could build something so massive and precise, especially since they had only copper and bronze tools to worth with. Exactly how they did this has been an unsolved  puzzle perplexing people for centuries.   It is said that the whole project took 30 years to complete -- 10 years  for preparation and 20 for the actual building. Many believe this to be possible, with the chance that it could have been built even  faster. The workmen who built the Great Pyramid were not slaves, as once thought, but regular Egyptian peasants who were conscripted to help with building for about three months out of the year -- i.e. during the time when the Nile floods and farmers were not needed in their fields. The stone was quarried on the east side of the Nile, cut into shape, and then placed on a sledge that was pulled by men to the rivers edge. Here, the huge stones were loaded onto barges, ferried across the river, and then dragged to the construction site. It is believed that the most likely way the Egyptians got those heavy stones up  so high was by building a huge, earthen  ramp. As each level was completed, the ramp was built higher, hiding the level below it. When all the huge stones were in place, the workmen worked from top to bottom to place the limestone covering. As they worked downward, the earthen ramp was removed little by little. Only once the limestone covering was completed could the ramp be fully removed and the Great Pyramid be revealed. Looting and Damage No one is sure how long the Great Pyramid stood intact before being looted, but it was probably not long. Centuries ago, all of the pharaohs riches had been taken, even his body had been removed. All that remains is the bottom of his granite coffin -- even the top is missing. The capstone is also long gone. Thinking there was still treasure inside,  Arab ruler Caliph Mamum ordered his men to hack their way into the Great Pyramid in 818 CE. They did manage to find the Grand Gallery and the granite coffin, but it had all been emptied of treasure long ago. Upset at so much hard work with no reward, the Arabs pried off the limestone covering and took some of the cut-stone blocks to use for buildings. In total, they took about 30-feet off the top of the Great Pyramid. What remains is an empty pyramid, still grand in size but not as pretty since just a very small portion of its once beautiful limestone casing remains along the bottom. What About Those Other Two Pyramids? The Great Pyramid at Giza now sits with two other pyramids. The second one was built by Khafre, Khufus son. Although Khafres pyramid appears larger than his fathers, its an illusion since the ground is higher under Khafres pyramid. In reality, it is 33.5-feet shorter. Khafre is believed to have also built the Great Sphinx, which sits regally by his pyramid. The third pyramid at Giza is much shorter, standing only 228-feet high. It was built as a burial place for Menkaura, Khufus grandson and Khafres son. The help protect these three pyramids at Giza from further vandalism and disrepair, they  were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979.
